I can never understand why Eisenhower/Kennedy decided to deploy 45 Jupiter MRBMs to Italy and Turkey in 1961.
By March 1961 we had 5 George Washington class SSBNs in commission and another 5 Ethan Allen class SSBNs were on the way.
Each of these boats carried 16 Polaris SLBMs armed with a 600 kiloton W47 warhead. 40 times more powerful than Little Boy dropped on Hiroshima !!!
We have always depended on a triad, land, air and sea based missiles.
The persistent fear is that some technological breakthrough will “render the seas transparent”.
OTOH, the Jupiters based on the Soviet Unions border pretty much forced them to put missiles in Cuber.
We pulled ours, they pulled theirs...
