Look into a manual transfer switch and a 30 amp inlet box. Reliance Mfg makes a nice little kit. On the exterior of your home it’s barely noticeable. Inside you can have up to ten circuits wired to it.
If the grid goes down you hook a portable generator to the inlet, flip the transfer switch to generator, and you have power to the important stuff in your home without having to run extension cords through open windows.
If you do it yourself no one will be the wiser.
