Best recommendation, for most, IMO. Even most "experts" at this are much lacking in knowledge. Nearly any one of you could do much more to reduce personal costs (clue: takes work...time consuming, sometimes very hard work and lots of it).

If you have a place to garden, start now. Hard packed, sterile soil takes years to develop well. If you're in the east, well, good for you. Get after it anyway, and get a taste of the work of canning (read and follow instructions carefully or risk death by botulism).

If away from city water, have a well drilled, and water, tested.

Become educated on regulations and costs first, especially in the West. Spying, gossiping, NIMBY eyes and ears in every locale await victims to fleece for their relatives and friends in the local socialist economy and various land grabbing schemes. They'll do it out of nothing more than jealousy and hatred.

Better study for a few years about that first, if the author's talking about rural water, alternative energy, etc. See "NIMBY" above.

Yes, but be very aware. Whole lot of robberies through hook and crook going on out there now, and many real families have already been ripped apart by the pathological social-social regime.

Get educated. More than anything else, avoid the "name Ash, Housewares" ("mountain man") posture. Extremely dangerous for city slickers or anyone else in many ways unimagined.
