I never heard of such perverts until I was a teenager, and even then it was never a topic discussed. I think I met one or two and had a “live and let live” attitude until the mid to late 80s when a friend who was active in protecting marriage (he knew what was coming down the road) educated me; he had a newsletter and a local radio show. Boy oh boy did my “live and let live” attitude change.
Heck, it was still that way in the rural South in the 80s.
BTW I've never understood the appeal of having sex with another man. The very thought of it makes me want to puke.
