In the middle of the article, there is a link to the actual 'scientific' report. It is an interesting read. Is says identifying a microstamp requires a stereomicroscope and scanning electron microscope (SEM), which I'm sure every police unit can afford /sarc/.

From the report: "For example, the criminal can always remove firing pins, alter scratch patterns by the use of abrasive polishing media, etc. Steps can be taken to minimize the effect of such alterations by use of microstamping in several places but such possibilities cannot be prevented entirely and will always exist. These considerations are not the topic of this discussion. In other words, microstamping can easily be defeated.

Just use a revolver, then throw a whole bunch of other shell casings around that you obtained from the local public range and watch the wacky, wild goose chase hilarity ensue.

Leftist dreams are so easily quashed.

Some place, maybe Canada but I am not sure, already tried it and despite spending millions, never solved a single crime.

Let all police departments test it out for a few decades, then tell us about it.

I bet the “peer review” was done by the same people who did the (incestuous) “peer review” in the MMGW scandals.

The very expression “peer review” has been deeply damaged by such people, and no longer passes muster just on its own, but must be backed up with references.

Importantly, many on the left now have the bizarre notion that they can dictate technological advances, such as demanding energy efficiency beyond current technologies.

Whatever ‘important tools’ might be available to the police, they are too busy with too many other unimportant duties to deal with the problem.

Get robbed? Burgled? What do the police say? Nothing We Can Do, Aren’t You Insured, etc.

Spare a thought for the man killed with a microstamped cartridge while you’re sitting in an East German style police checkpoint and its abysmal arrest rate.

“it is an important tool for law enforcement to solve violent gun crimes.”

You know what else would be an important tool? Just putting ankle bracelet transponders on all of us, so the government knows where we are at all times. Or we could just lock up everyone except for the cops and politicians. /s

How about the consideration of just how physically dangerous this type of crap is? Putting sharp cornered indentations in a primer or cartridge case is courting a ruptured case, blown out primer, etc. That can lead to a physical break down of parts of the gun and eventually injury or death of the shooter.

As a manufacturer of firearms, I will NEVER put microstamping technology in any firearm I build. EVER. I’m not that stupid and I’m not going to put myself in a situation where I endanger someones life like that.

Any technology that can be defeated by a finger nail file isn’t useful technology.

It seems to me that once the bullet separates from the shell you no longer really have a relationship between the two. How do you prove the bullet came from that shell casing?
