The undergraduate commencements are by the different “Colleges” at UCSC. Unlike my undergrad days at Missouri where I was in the “College of Engineering,” at UCSC a “college” means a motley collection of kids in different academic disciplines. So at today’s commencement, we had mostly wacko liberal arts kooks (film, digital media, women’s studies, etc) mixed in with very few hard sciences grads like my daughter. I think there was one other person in Biology. It was a real shame because it blends people with their heads screwed on straight with the lunatics...and the lunatics dominated 50:1. Fortunately, my daughter didn’t get polluted by the nuts.
I remember my daughter doing one paper that refuted the “science” of global warming. She got punished by her teacher on her grade, but about half the class congratulated her for her stand and secretly admitted to her that they agreed with her!
I hadn’t heard about the damage to the Catholic Church in SC...very sad.
We live in the Bay Area, and my son is starting college in the fall. He got into several of the UCs, but turned them all down.
He’s going to Texas for college to my alma mater, Texas A&M.
He wants out of California.
The thing is that out of state tuition at A&M is about the same as in state for the UCs.
You took a real chance sending her to Santa Cruz. It's a beautiful place, but it is full of left wing nuts, that's for sure. Our son's graduate housing was right in the middle of the redwood forest. He had to walk across the wooden bridge, past the deer to get to his classes. Fortunately, our son was already well-grounded before he got there for graduate school. I just about barfed, though, when I had to look at Angela Davis up on the podium giving out degrees.
