For many politicians, the purpose of getting to DC is to get plugged into the network of insiders, and get the perks and fringe benefits of being a congress-critter: the inside info on how the economy will go, so your investments do well; the wining and dining by lobbyists; the cute young interns and lobbyist assistants, who are so eager the please; etc.
The problem is, you only get the perks as long as you play along. You can be as much of a lecher and as corrupt as you want -- as long as you please the real powers in DC the press will take no notice. The minute that you displease them by trying to oppose their agendas, however, all your past conduct goes under a microscope, and the accumulated files come out. This is why the longer politicians stay in DC, the more compromised they are.
I agree 100%.

That is a fantastic description if how our government institutions operate, if the press can’t dig up enough dirt they will manufacture it. Anyone opposing the DC machine get’s immediately Clintonized.
