I hope it's true, because I can't help but think that a country that does not take the bailout and instead decides to tough it out, will be better off in the long run.

No, contrary to the author's propaganda attempt, Italy didn't refuse a bailout, although Monti did. And what will he say tomorrow? Who knows?
