GOP leaders skeptical about US attorneys' freedom in leaks probe

Attorney General Eric Holder's announcement that two U.S. attorneys have been assigned to lead a criminal investigation into possible, unauthorized leaks of classified information is being met with skepticism by GOP lawmakers questioning whether the attorneys will be able to act independently of the Obama administration.

"I have no doubt that these U.S. attorneys are excellent prosecutors," GOP Sen. Saxby Chambliss, vice chairman of the Senate Intelligence Committee, said. "However, they would still be operating under the Obama administration's Department of Justice. The better solution is to appoint an outside counsel to impartially investigate what will likely lead to a White House inquiry."

Holder said late Friday he had assigned the investigation to Ronald C. Machen Jr., a U.S. attorney for the District of Columbia, and Rod J. Rosenstein, a U.S. attorney for Maryland.

"These two highly-respected and experienced prosecutors will be directing separate investigations currently being conducted by the FBI," Holder said. "I have every confidence in their abilities to doggedly follow the facts and the evidence in the pursuit of justice wherever it leads."

The announcement follows a bipartisan call from Capitol Hill for an investigation and a special prosecutor to look into suspect national security leaks -- which congressional lawmakers say is needed because the disclosures have put Americans world-wide at risk and perhaps came from the administration.

The announcement follows a bipartisan call from Capitol Hill for an investigation and a special prosecutor to look into suspect national security leaks ...

"The accelerating pace of such disclosures, the sensitivity of the matters in question, and the harm caused to our national security interests is alarming and unacceptable," Sens. Diane Feinstein, D-Calif., Chambliss, R-Ga., chairman and ranking Republican on the Senate intelligence committee, as well as Reps. Mike Rogers, R-Mich., and C.A. "Dutch" Ruppersberger, D-Md. chairman and ranking Democrat on the House intelligence committee, said in a joint statement this week.

So a corrupt DOJ is going to investigate a less than transparent or forthcoming administration. This should work out well. We will know nothing til Nov 7th and not before.

We shall see. However, IMHO 0bama/Holder will be forced to appoint an independent special prosecutor. The precedent has been set.

and in this case, unlike the crappy lies the liberals manufacture (i.e. plamegate; rathergate; anitahillgate), it IS the nature of the evidence ... AND ... the seriousness of the charge!

I think the Repubs should appoint Janet Reno for this investigation. She’s a Clintonista and I smell bad blood in the water between the Clintons and the Obamas.

“Holder said late Friday he had assigned the investigation to Ronald C. Machen Jr., a U.S. attorney for the District of Columbia, and Rod J. Rosenstein, a U.S. attorney for Maryland.”

It’s no coincidence that DC and Maryland are two of the biggest bastions of far left liberalism in the country. Holder is clearly attempting to put a fire wall around this scandal. It’s all about circling the wagons.

The Attorney General and half this country’s population know where the leaks came from

Obama leaked them because he is desperate to try to look like he is doing something.

Mara Liasson gave away the final line on this on Fox News: “If the president authorizes it, it is not a crime. The President can authroize the declassification of any information.”

“they will have to be forced to do the right thing.”

The only way an independent prosecutor is ever named is if there is a constant media drumbeat for one - which will never happen with the Obama compliant media.

I would like Romney to answer the question if he would appoint a special prosecutor to dig into Obama’s Department of Justice and White House security leaks. It might set a precedent, but this nation needs to know what a corrupt administration Obama’s has been.

Next election is about “Trust” and Obama has broken that trust and the folks know it. I may not fully trust Mitt but I can elect more folks to keep him in line and not worry about being reelected. Can I trust Mitt? Yes but I must make sure I send folks that will keep his feet to the fire. I do not believe a Mitt administration will be corrupt or autocratic to the max. Hoping for leadership I can trust and an American Vision I Can Believe In.
