“Different strokes for different folks in Germany the autobahn goes faster than this. But also in Germany you have to go through a far more rigorous process to get a drivers license.”
Germans follow lane discipline; Americans won’t. That makes any speed dangerous.
I’ve driven from Lost Angeles metro to Phoenix several times on I10, which is good quality road most of the way.
Many go 85 which is okay with me. What is NOT okay and NOT safe are those who pass on the right, or stay in the left holding up traffic.
I lived in Germany, drove the Autobahn, and they are better drivers, and they will follow lane discipline, which makes it safe to go 85 and faster.
In 2009 I was cruising the autobahn at 160 kph (100mph) thinking it was cool. Then a Porsche passed like I was standing still with a huge whale tail fin up. Anyway, I caught up tp him in a few minutes at the next traffic cogestion point.
good point, but if you are getting passed on the right, maybe you need to move over to the right lane. Simple. I follow the rule of stay to the right most of the time and only use the left lane to pass. Too bad more people didn’t follow this rule. Nothing worse than mindless drivers pacing each other at 65mph backing up traffic wanting to do 80-90 when one could pass and then get the heck over to the right. It’s like these drivers are oblivious. Don’t they look in their rear view mirror?
Precisely so. Central Italy is also quite good on this in my experience.
This image tells the tale, and is a reminder how things are supposed to work:
Unfortunately all too often we end up with some self-righteous SOB camped out in the fast lane doing the speed limit, or 5pmh under. Or some idiot jabbering on his cell phone doing the same thing. They both need to be ticketed for failing to yield right of way to the string of cars stacked up behind them.
