Zombie Bullets In High Demand Following Flesh-Eating Attacks

DETROIT (WWJ) – Worried about a zombie attack? Buy zombie bullets.

Talk about zombies and a possible zombie apocalypse has increased due to recent gory accounts of drug-induced, flesh-eating attacks in the news.

Stores across the U.S., including in Metro Detroit, are getting in on the undead action by selling Zombie Bullets, made by Hornady Manufacturing.

In promoting the product on their website, Hornady suggests, “Be PREPARED – supply yourself for the Zombie Apocalypse with Zombie Max ammunition from Hornady! Loaded with PROVEN Z-Max bullets… MAKE DEAD PERMANENT!”

So, will this ammunition actually defend against the things that go bump in the night?

WWJ Newsradio 950′s Zahra Huber spoke with company spokesman, Everett Deger, who said, while the bullets are real, they’re only meant to be used on targets and not on people (or zombies).

Deger said company president Steve Hornady came up with the idea for Zombie Max bullets because of his love for zombie movies and shows.

“After it gained some acceptance among some of us here in the company got on board with the idea we decided just to have some fun with a marketing plan that would allow us to create some ammunition designed for that … fictional world,” Deger said.

He said the Zombie Max and Z-Max bullets are Horady’s most successful products.

“This is probably one of the only (product) launches that we’ve seen when people who are not in the hunting and shooting industry will go out and they will purchase this,” Deger said.

“I mean, I’ve heard of guys who buy it just because they think the packaging is cool and they set it on their cube and they don’t even own a gun,” he said. ”It has that sort of cross-market appeal, which I think is rare to find these days, where you can actually sell something that will transcend not just one market but go into several.”

I don't get it. OK, I get that it's a marketing ploy, but is there anything special about this ammo? Is this, as one poster suggests, a rebranding and renaming of the old Black Talon ammo banned during the reign of krinton? Does this stuff blow up, use spent uranium or have any other cool properties?

Enquiring minds want to know.

The most special thing I can tell about this ammo is the price.

Since this is about a 'fictional world' (although that is getting hard to prove), If I was given the choice of any weapon, it would be this:

The weapon is selective fire, operating as a semi-automatic, or in fully automatic mode at 300 rounds per minute. It is fed from either an 8-shell box magazine, or a 20- or 32-shell drum magazine. It is made of 12 different kinds of STAINLESS STEEL and NEVER needs maintenance of LUBRICATION. You can hold it under water for an hour, pull it out and immediately start firing.

The frag grenade, for example, can be put through the window of a house from 100 metres away, and will explode with a burst radius of up to nine feet. Send a dozen in there, and there'll be very little left when the troops go knocking on the door.

I was looking at this ammo at a gun show and it looks just like Hornady's "critical defense" ammo with a neon green tip versus the normal red tip.

OBTW, the "critical defense" ammo is very good defense ammo. It is designed to penetrate approximately 12 inches and mushroom very well. For .380 ammunition it costs about $1.25 a round. Not cheap, but if it penetrates in the body like it is supposed to, then it will be very effective. The green/red tip keeps the hollow point from being clogged up from your attacker's clothing when it penetrates; which has been a problem with hollow point ammo.

Some of these guys seem to think that zombies are armored, or giants or something, they keep wanting more and more powerful armament.

The object with zombies is to simply penetrate their skull, to ‘pop their heads’.

The smaller caliber that is adequate, the larger magazine to reduce magazine changes and losing the sight picture, the ability to rapidly engage multiple targets accurately and with the least fatigue inducing activity seems to be the secret to success for me.

Give me an AR-15, 40 round mags and a high capacity 9mm for off the shelf guns and ammo.

I don’t want to be exhausting myself with a 12 gauge and a machete, especially in a crowd/ocean of zombies.

Those hot little 22 bullets would work great also, especially with 30 round pistols like the Kel-Tec 22magnum.

No, but in my opinion the Hornady TAP ammunition is the best commercial self defense rifle ammunition you can buy. It is not chep,but not the most expensive either. It is the most accurate expandig am,o I have ever used. E.g. routinely same hole & clover leaf groupings at 100 yds with scopedheavy barrel Savage .223. Half inch groups at 200.
