Second largest eruption in the world since Tambora happened 100 years ago this day!
Novarupta in the Mt. Katmai area in Alaska, leading to formation of the "Valley of Ten Thousand Smokes (which have cooled and no longer smoke)" and a huge crater lake. It put out about 14 cubic miles of magma, 30 times St. Helens. It was about 2/3 the size of Krakatoa and a bit larger than the only other VE6 of the 20th Century, Pinatubo. It was so isolated then that only 10 fatalities were reported, but was so unusual was made a national monument within 6 years. I doubt 1 in 100, at least outside of Alaskans, can name the volcano with the largest eruption in the history of the US.
