The Associated Press has called the 10th Congressional District primary race for Newark City Councilman Donald Payne Jr. Payne Jr. out-raised, outspent, and in the end, out-campaigned fellow City Councilman Ron Rice and State Sen. Nia Gill, his two biggest challengers in a heated race to succeed his father, U.S. Rep. Donald Payne Sr., who died in March after a battle with colon cancer. Payne won in the 10th District, which carries parts of Essex, Hudson and Union Counties. The seat was vacated when his father, Rep. Donald Payne Sr. died in March after a battle with colon cancer. Now Payne is a virtual lock to fill the remainder of his fathers term and start anew in January 2013 as the second African American ever sent to Congress by the state of New Jersey.

I am amazed to read that this is only the 2nd African American ever sent to Congress from the almost always blue state of New Jersey. Isn’t it ironic that they are both named Payne?
Couldn’t they let an African American Dem represent NJ-1 in Camden and not Andrews?
