I remember eating salt tablets available on the wall of the un-airconditioned factory I worked in in the late 60's in Baltimore's humid summer; I ran the (molten) Salt Bath.

Still kickin'

Used to work "General Services" (labor gang) in a steel mill in the middle 60s. One of our duties was to drill and jackhammer slag out of the soaking pits ( place where they kept ingots heated prior to being rolled ). We ate salt jellies and washed them down with Nehi orange. It was OK because they waited until they cooled to 140 before you got sent in for alternating half hour shifts.
