Sunday Herald column ping

Zero-percenter grabs 96%

The fix was in.

I told you that Thursday. Deval wouldn’t have been so arrogant as to “speak for the people of the commonwealth” if he wasn’t pulling out all the stops. He hadn’t worked this hard since he was stonewalling the press when they were trying to get the cellphone records of his pajama-clad, 108-mph-driving lieutenant governor.

Granny gets 95.7 percent of the vote — more than anyone else since the convention was brought back in 1982. The bosses called the shots. They twisted arms and knuckled hacks in a smoke-filled room where no smoking was allowed.

It didn’t use to be this way. Say what you will about the comrades who attend these politburos, they’ll generally give any even semi-legitimate candidate a spot on the primary ballot.

Look at John Kerry in 2008. In his own mind anyway, he was the real president who’d had the election stolen from him in 2004. But the moonbats still put a guy named O’Reilly on the ballot against him. He ruined Liveshot’s summer chasing him around the state. It was the revenge of Hillary’s hens for his endorsement of Barack Obama.

Two years earlier, a Green named John Bonifaz wanted to run against Secretary of State Bill Galvin. He was a pal of Nader’s, the guy who cost the Democrats the 2000 election. But Galvin doesn’t fit with the moonbats. He’s a Boston Irish-Catholic — in other words, an American — so Bonifaz was waved through.

But what the hell did Marisa DeFranco do wrong? She’s a woman, a lawyer who represents illegal aliens. Her bona fides were in order ... at least until Deval started ladling out the Kool-Aid.

The rationale, I guess, is that Kerry and Galvin didn’t have serious Republican opposition, and that this year the moonbats needed to clear the decks for the struggle against Scott Brown. He’s pretty evil, you know. He was born in Massachusetts, one strike against him, and he’s been in the military, strike two. He’s married — to a woman. Not a carpetbagger and not an Ivy Leaguer — how dare such an ... American even attempt to run for office in Massachusetts?

But wouldn’t a few more debates have helped Lieawatha? Consider just the past 48 hours. She claimed her parents had to “elope,” because of the anti-Indian prejudice against her mother. Then it turned out, on a Cherokee website, that her parents had been married just 14 miles from home, in their county seat, by the local Methodist Episcopal preacher, apparently at his church.

Hardly what most people would consider an “elopement.”

Then it turned out she was for flipping real estate and grabbing bottom-dollar foreclosed property before she was against it. On one flip in 1993, she turned a 383 percent profit in five months.

Then there’s her telling a UMass group that her maternal grandmother had taken part in the Sooner land rush of 1889 and lived “to see her youngest grandchild — that’s me — graduate from college.” Interesting, because the grandma died in 1969, according to a death notice in The Oklahoman newspaper, and Warren didn’t graduate until 1970. Now she’s backpedaling, telling the Herald’s Hillary Chabot on Friday her grandma “lived to know I would graduate from college.” Minor stuff, perhaps, except in the context of the cascade of whoppers that have preceded it.

Better luck next time Marisa. If only you hadn’t been from Massachusetts ...

Will Howie be back on air this week?

Hubby and I thought about driving up to Springfield (about 30-40 minutes from here) to heckle the Massachusetts 'RATs outside their convention this past weekend. By the time I learned about where and when the convention was late last Friday, it was mostly over - and we had plans on Saturday.

I guess only about three Cherokees showed up to heckle "Lieawatha Liz"? Too bad... I was hoping the pro-Romney crowd that heckled Axelrod would have made an appearance in Springfield outside the convention.

nutmeg: Yes I think he will be back on today. Yes only about 3 Cherokee protestors showed up (as it is I think the protest was somewhere away from the conv. center)—lack of advance notice, lousy weather to blame it’s said.

all: Howie should be interesting. btw 10 yrs ago this
week, according to Scott Fybush’s North East Radio Watch,
Howie flagship WRKO got rid of Laura Schlessinger and started a new show with Doug “VB” (Virgin Boy) Goudie called the Pleasure Pit. It only lasted a yr, maybe even less, and
VB left to go to Fox 25. I have much if not all of VB’s
final show on audio cass. (...somewhere). He used to talk about stuff like

—any news item that referred to a “Brass Monkey” (they’d
play a Beastie Boys song by that name)
—a sexual molester in Boston’s North End, which he called
“updates on the Ravioli Rapist”
—he’d talk with newsman Ben Parker.

again the show only lasted a yr or so since he went to
Fox 25.

Thanks for the Howie info! Heard him yesterday... glad Howie is back, hopefully for the entire week. The guy that filled in for him late last week was pretty good, but now his name escapes me...

I'm not a big fan of the Nelson guy (Ricky Nelson?), and I admit I've lost a fair amount of respect for Col. Hunt since he voted for Obama (!) in 2008. I can't remember if he despised McCain or Sarah Palin or both, but - IMO - there's no excuse for any so-called "conservative" to vote for Obama in 2008, 2012, or ever.

On Monday they had Col Hunt and yes he did vote for Obama.
Tue was Avi Nelson, who ran for US Senate in the 70s against Ed Brooke in the Republican Primary (MA). Did radio show for years in Boston, was on TV.

Wed I think was Joe Battenfeld, Boston Herald reporter. And Thu and Fri was Jeff Kuhner who works for the Washington Times and does some radio (fill ins for Savage, his own show in Washington DC)

Thanks again, FRiend! It was Jeff Kuhner... he did a great job. My husband was listening also, and he enjoyed Kuhner's show(s). I'm not sure if we heard Joe Battenfeld.

Nelson's name is "Avi"? Actually, now I know why I always think of the TV/showbiz Nelson family when I hear him. I always thought he was saying: "This is Ozzie Nelson filling in for Howie Carr..." (remember, I often get a fair amount of static from 560 AM, WHYN)

Is Avi Nelson related to the showbiz Nelson family?

Avi Nelson's voice reminds me of Mark Davis, the AWFUL sub host that Rush uses way too often. Maybe I should give Avi another chance...

What's your opinion of Howie's guest hosts?

I don’t think Avi Nelson is related to the Ozzie-and-Harriet Nelsons...I think he’s from a Russian-American Jewish family (though he may be an atheist or agnostic himself)

From WRKO:
>>Avi Nelson received a bachelor’s degree from Yale in electrical engineering, an MBA from Cornell, and a Master of Science degree in applied physics from Harvard (experimental work done at MIT).

His first job was as an R&D (Research & Development) engineer in high-powered microwave tubes at Raytheon, but he has been doing political analysis and commentary in Boston since 1973. For two years he was a twice weekly columnist at the Boston Herald. For eighteen years he was a radio talk show host on various stations, and for six years he was the editorial director at WEEI, when it was the all-news radio station. In that capacity he wrote and broadcast over 700 editorials.

Avi has been on television here since 1975. He has hosted his own program on channels 7 and 38. On channel 5 he was a charter member and regular panelist on Five on Five – a Sunday morning public affairs program that aired for over twenty two years. For a couple of those years, when John Kerry was on the program, he and Avi also did a series of one-on-one commentaries on the evening news. Currently, Avi appears occasionally on the Channel 2 program “Greater Boston.” On radio he is a talk host on Boston station WRKO.

At the national level Avi was an advocate on the PBS series “The Advocates,” moderated by Mike Dukakis, and was a panelist on the PBS series “The Constitution, That Delicate Balance.”

Politically, Avi Nelson was a media and issues consultant to Governor Ed King (D – MA) and to Ronald Reagan’s presidential campaign in 1980. He was on the executive committee, chaired by future governor and ambassador Paul Cellucci (R-MA), for the MA presidential campaign of George Bush in 1988. Avi himself was a Republican candidate for Congress in 1972 and for the U.S. Senate in 1978.

In business, Avi has been an entrepreneur, having started a television station in the Boston market. He was founder, chairman and CEO of WMFP-TV, channel 62 – until its sale in 1995. He is currently a principal and a director of Flight Landata, Inc., a company that makes high resolution, aerial remote sensing devices for the military. He has been awarded several patents in electronics.

Avi has been involved with a number of charitable endeavors, including two years as Crusade Chairman of the American Cancer Society – MA Division. He is currently on the board of the MA Prostate Cancer Coalition.

From 1962 to 2001 Avi played semi-pro or advanced amateur baseball in the Boston Park League and Yawkey League. He is in both leagues’ Halls of Fame – and continues to play ball in two age-limited leagues.

Additional interests include physics and music composition. In physics, his first paper on special relativity (July, 2003) and an additional comment (July, 2004) were published in the European Journal of Physics. His first formal musical work, a Ballade for piano, received its broadcast premiere on WCRB-FM (the classical music station in Boston) in June, 2000.

Avi grew up in MA and resides north of Boston with his border collie, Katie (world’s best dog), his cat Phyllabonque and a feral cat Phyllandra (who lives in the garage).

I like Jeff Kuhner and Avi Nelson. Can’t quite take the Colonel’s voice. Joe Battenfield is OK.

Jeff Katz used to fill in for Howie but 2 yrs ago he joined Talk 1200 as morning show host. Katz is a big fan of Howie’s and frequently links to his columns on his Facebook.

Wed column ping

Liz Warren, Democrats missed opportunity
By Howie Carr | Wednesday, June 6, 2012 | http://www.bostonherald.com | Columnists

The Democrats made a mistake getting rid of Marisa DeFranco at the convention last weekend. Granny Warren could have used three or four unwatched mid-summer TV debates for practice, because she’s not ready for prime time.

I mean, when you come unarmed to a battle of wits with Sharman Sacchetti, you’ve got a problem. When you have to appeal first to Andy Hiller and then Deval Patrick to rescue you from the same questions you’ve been asked continuously for five weeks, you could use a lot more training on the light punching bag.

Which is why DeFranco had to go, I guess. She would have just made Granny look even worse, and DeFranco had started taking her case to the pro-Brown media. Still, wasn’t it odd that Deval could bring the delegates to their feet saying of Obama, “I will not let him be bullied out of office.”

And then they bullied DeFranco out of the race.

I predict a maximum of four debates — TV debates. Radio debates don’t count.

If the first TV debate is boring, the other ones won’t matter as much, because a lot of the audience won’t be back. Both candidates have more money than God, and when you can control your message with paid media, you aren’t as hot to trot to go on live TV. Too risky.

If I were advising Granny, I’d tell her, be even duller than usual in that first debate. If this weren’t a presidential year, this fight would already be over. Your only shot is riding Obama’s coattails, tattered as they are. A straight ticket is your only ticket. Just ask Suzanne Bump, if you even know who she is.

Say something nice about Mumbles, too.

He laps that flattery stuff up with a spoon, and he’s the one who pushed Bump past Mary Z. Connaughton in 2010 when the Republican carried the rest of the state.

Here’s the tough part for Granny. She can’t tell any more whoppers. She’s an academic, which means no one ever questions her in the classroom. So she’s developed this bad habit of making it up as she goes along. Ever hear of fact-checkers, Granny? Not all of them are going to be Globe reporters just waiting to slobber all over you again.

As for Scott Brown, he just can’t come off as a wiseguy.

That won’t be a problem. He’s been around long enough not to take the bait.

Scott’s biggest goal is to get a moderator who’s not in the satchel.

David Gergen, this means you. It worked out pretty well for Brown in 2010, when he hit the “Ted Kennedy seat” question out of the ballpark, but overall RINO Gergen’s questions were outrageously one-sided. They were so bad Brown catalogued them in his memoir.

One last thing: Some expert said yesterday that Granny “doesn’t want to look like an elitist.”

Too late!

Tomorrow they hope to do the new death pool.

Michele McPhee returns to middays on June 11

Boston, MA -- Today WRKO announced that starting on Monday, June 11th Michele McPhee will return to the station as the new host of middays 11am to 3pm. McPhee will replace Laura Ingraham and Jen Brien, and will also serve as the primary fill-in for Howie Carr.

McPhee commented on how excited she was to be back at WRKO, "While I loved breaking stories for Team 5 Investigates and worked alongside some of Boston's legendary TV personalities, I missed fighting for the common man in the Commonwealth on WRKO. So much outrage, so little time. I'm looking forward to engaging in the conversation again."

"This is great day for our brand, our clients, and most importantly our listeners," said Jeff Brown, Vice President and General Manager/Entercom Boston. "We are excited about this change, excited to have Michele back at WRKO and excited to continue our track record of delivering advertiser results."

Michele McPhee is no stranger to local listeners. She is a frequent commentator on Boston's Fox 25 and is the New England correspondent for ABC News. She also appears each Monday in the Boston Herald. She is a celebrated author and has covered high-profile crime cases across the country and has been a commentator on breaking news for national programs on CNN; MSNBC; and the Fox News Network. McPhee was the first female Police Bureau Chief for the New York Daily News and was a weekly columnist and the Police Bureau Chief for the Boston Herald.

"It's great to have Michele back at WRKO. She did a terrific job for us before and I'm very excited about getting her back on the air in this expanded midday role. Michele is Boston. An outstanding reporter with tremendous credibility, she will provide our listeners with high energy and passion every day," said Jason Wolfe.

Meh, I didn't mind McPhee so much.

Yeah, her voice is annoying. But so are most Bostoners'.

Hopefully she'll have a podcast.

RKO politics heavy thru election season. Joe Battenfeld and Garrett Quinn may do fill ins; you wonder if McPhee gets Howie’s slot if he leaves. (He may be forced to stay 2 more
years, who knows)

Programming alert: due to C’s-Sox conflict, 680 takes Sox tonight so around 6:40 expect the VERY exciting Sox pregame show. If C’s series goes seven games it’ll be on Sat night. If C’s make finals—vs, Okla City, would Liz W cheer for them?—some last conflicts (starting next Tue.) then
