My pop....was in the USMC. He recalled to me once...about talking to another Marine, who happened to be a mormon..while crossing the Pacific during WWII in a ship headed for some island.

Don't know why the conversation came up...it was many, many years ago.

Now if that was Mitt’s Dad on his way to Iwo, I would be very impressed but I suspect it wasn’t.. Nonetheless, I am proud of your Dad and his Mormon fellow Marine and if they are still with us, please pass my warmest salute and Semper Fidelis to them.

The massive draft and service of WWII created a level of unusual diversity.

The Marines, Navy, and Coast Guard drafted 1,730,000, 93% of the Army of WWII was draftees.
