I've purchased authentic designer bags from ebay at a fraction of the price.

Designers who are off of many people's radars, but their product is made with the same quality leathers and hand stitching as Hermes.

It also cuts down on the danger of buying a counterfeit when a name doesn't have the buzz.

A good friend of mine has an eBay store. She specializes in “vintage” handbags, shoes, boots and coats (“vintage” meaning as in not new : ), ) but good quality and by known designers. She mostly looks for 60’s and 70’s stuff but will do new stuff if it’s the right find for the right price.

She actually does quite well. She finds most of what she sells at second hand stores, flea markets and yard sales. She’s very selective in what she buys for resale and is pretty knowledgeable about how to detect knock offs and sometimes comes across incredible finds (like the brand new Coach bag with the tags still on it for $10), although she has to sift through a lot of junk to find them and comes across quite a few knock offs. Interestingly she sells and ships a lot of boots to Australia and a good bit of the funkiest shoes and coats to countries in the Middle East.

But even if she’s 99% sure an item is authentic, she’s very careful not to say so just in case. She’ll list as “appears to be” or “tag says”. She’ll take lots of pictures of any of the identifying labels and markings and let the buyer decide if it’s the real deal. She told me eBay can get quite testy if they catch you selling knock offs as authentic and one time some designer brand (it might have been Kate Spade) had eBay take one of her listings down because they suspected it was a forgery. IIRC they even sent her a cease and desist letter.
