I am confused. Adult and placenta don’t compute for me.

In the context of stem cells, “adult” refers to stem cells from an organism which has already undergone tissue differentiation ... essentially, is no longer an embryo. Placentas and umbilical cords contain loads of stem cells ... “adult” by cell standards, even though taken from an infant.
