The statute of limitations does not run if you flee the jurisdiction to avoid prosecution. The statute of limitations is the time they have to charge a defendant, not the time they have to try the case. I suspect charges were filed immediately after his escape.

The right to a speedy trial is the time between the charge & the trial.
The SOL is the time they have to charge you after the original crime is committed.
If you flee to avoid, that might be a crime that lacks SOL
