Good luck to those students who set out to learn Arabic. Arabic is a tough language for English speakers to learn—even tougher than other Semitic languages such as Hebrew. Whereas a good student can read a newspaper in French, Spanish, German or even Russian after about a year of studying the language, I have been told by those who have studied the language that it takes about four years of study before one can read a newspaper in Arabic.

That figures .... when you have to learn to read all the nasty stuff interpolated between the lines, I suppose it can be a load.

OTOH, you have to read TIME or the WaPo at least three times, and that's just for native English speakers -- once to see what they're beefing about this time, once to read all the political messages between the lines, and a third time so you can figure out for yourself why they want you to believe all their crap, and what their operational objective in writing the storylie was -- 'scuse me, I meant storyline.
