Miami Beach will be flooded with visitors this Memorial Day Weekend as part of the 13th annual Urban Beach Week, which is dubbed the largest Urban festival in the world.
Due to the large number of people expected, upwards of 300,000 to 350,000 people, Miami Beach police are implementing some new procedures to ensure the safety of residents and visitors alike.

Because there is nothing that can be done to stop the rampaging, all decent people must flee the area whenever one of these known violent events is to occur. (It’s the only rational response for someone protecting their families.)
Is that unrestricted access to public places? There are two methods of restricting the access. One keeps the place the same as it was, the other involves decent folks coming home to heavily damaged neighborhoods.
“Because there is nothing that can be done to stop the rampaging”
I don’t accept that premise.
If the cops can’t handle it, they should all be fired for failing at their jobs. Or the national guard brought in, as in Los Angeles during the Rodney King riots.
The cops don’t get to abdicate their responsibility AND enact unconstitutional rules without due process.
Every war we have fought is to preserve such fundamental rights: to be safe from the guys with guns and color of authority.
I’ll go anywhere I damn well please. And no, I don’t have to show you “proof of residency” or I.D. of any kind, unless you have good reason to think I’ve committed a crime.
I double-dog dare you to go to Miami Beach for the Urban Festival this weekend. Or any other of a number of annual urban festivals that go on all the time. While there, tell a cop asking you who you are to shove it. Say, “Ill go anywhere I damn well please. And no, I dont have to show you proof of residency or I.D. of any kind, unless you have good reason to think Ive committed a crime.”
Please report back here your results, after you get out on bail. And see how much sympathy you get.
You think I don’t know what would happen if one person, even if they’re right, challenged the cops on the street? One against an army?
My point is the residents of this city are fools to accept police-state tactics as a necessary consequence of legitimate law enforcement.
The police do not get to extract concessions of your rights as a condition of doing their job, which is enforcing existing laws while leaving law-abiding citizens alone.
You’re unwittingly advancing the police state argument for giving up, for example, the right to own a gun. “Oh, it’s the price we all have to pay for living in a safe society.”
Not me.
I was in Miami for the first time last weekend. My concierge told me that I am lucky that I was there last weekend and not this.
I just thought that he meant that it would be crowded from beach goers, not that it was an Urban Feral Extravaganza.
