November 7, 2012 It may not be morning in America, but be thankful that its not the dawn of the living dead. With civil war breaking out in Greece, Spain in chaos as it seeks to exit the euro, California preparing to file bankruptcy following the failure of Governor Jerry Browns budget referendum, and Portland, Oakland, and Seattle busy clearing the rubble from the devastation of their Occupy fires, the American electorate has finally said Enough!
The great experiment in progressive democracy is over. Convincing a majority of American voters that they can live at someone elses expense proved a bridge too far, as those same voters watched the social democracies of Europe unravel. When presented with a choice between two presidential candidates with diametrically opposed visions of the proper role of government, Americans chose to step back from the abyss.
To no ones surprise, the campaign was ugly. As each successive poll revealed incumbent President Barack Obama slipping further behind, the Obama camps attacks grew ever shriller. Class, gender, race, religion, ethnicity, sexualitynot variant of identity politics was left untapped in what turned out to be a futile attempt to divide the electorate into warring camps and shift the debate to anything besides the deteriorating economy and the cataclysmic national debt.
The Supreme Courts evisceration of Obamacarethe presidents signature accomplishmentset the tone for a long, hot summer. The Occupy movements escalating campaign of violence, which culminated in major street battles at both national conventions, did little to help Obamas cause. That is why I used the phrase as irony.
The green shoots that I see is Obama’s campaign running against profit and for spending.
Most people realize the utter vacuity of this approach. There is no there there. Just an empty suit with a teleprompter and some foam greek columns borrowed from a local bath house.
