The CBC is planning some counter-programming for female non-hockey fans who might be forced to tune into the Stanley Cup final next week.
Viewers can go online to listen to an alternate commentary from Lena Sutherland and Jules Mancuso, who run WhileTheMenWatch.com. They describe their site as a sports talk show for women, Sex and the City meets ESPN, with banter from a womans point of view.
One afternoon while (our husbands) were both watching the same game on TV Jules and I were on the phone and we started just making comments to each other like, Did you see that guys hair? and Whats going on with that coach wearing the suit four sizes too big for him? said Sutherland of their web shows inspiration.
And we kind of thought, Wow, this is funny, wouldnt it be great if we could tune into an alternative version of the commentary from a female perspective? And that was kind of where we got the idea.
On Twitter, a slew of posts denounced the programming as sexist.
Seriously #CBC? While the Men Watch? Im a serious sports fan and can go toe to toe with any male fan. Thanks for the patronizing insult, wrote Laurie Kempton.
In an interview, Kempton who follows hockey, soccer and NFL football said she doubted her non-sports-watching female friends would be interested in the commentary.
They would equally be insulted. Most of the women who are my friends are engaged in gender issues, theyre looking for equality and full participation in all aspects of life, whether its politics or arts or sports, and the idea that its limited in this kind of really narrow paternalistic way, they would be insulted, Kempton said.

Instead of just turning up the TV volume, they could also do alternate commentary for the hearing impaired.
What a fun idea!
Congressional Black Caucus
I totally believe her.
Now here’s my kinda hockey mom ...

Hey, CBC: Who. Freaking. Cares? </spit>
This sounds like it might be amusing for about 5 minutes.
Canadian Broadcasting Corporation aka the corpse
I’m glad she didn’t put on a jersey of either team.
The non-hockey interested women can go onto Pinterest and and have a pin fest...that’s what seemed to happen during the Super Bowl.
Or, I guess they can watch that crap hockey for women who don’t like hockey...but I’m fairly certain that the hubbys aren’t going to watch that...so...they must have a TV to themselves...right? So, why not just watch whatever it is that typical women watch on TV?
As for me, I’ll be right there with my guys (hubby and son)...my figure skater daughter might even pop in occasionally to be a skate snob (and snag munchies). Heck...they might even be planning something at the rink we skate at...then we can have “real game food” (chili dogs, slushies, pop corn). And they might have a skate session going for “the Princess”. :P
There is nothing short of turning it into an MMA event that can make hockey interesting...soccer on skates.
Especially a Phlyers jersey ...
;o)
Hockey is Canada’s national passion. Their women are into it just as much as the men are. I can’t imagine who will be watching this.
As a female hockey fan, I have to say nuts to this.
There is nothing better than being in Canada, watching Hockey Night, and commenting on what a dumbass Glenn Healy is.
