“Christian voters potentially elevating a counterfeit ‘scripture’ to be presented to the world as ‘scripture.’”
The world is well aware that Mormonism exists and has a scripture. This wouldn’t do anything more to elevate that scripture, or rather anything more than electing a Mormon would. We’ve already had a congressman, Keith Ellison, swear by the Koran, and I don’t remember next day it being as important to the majority of Americans as the Bible.
The oath of office is a highly symbolic ritual. But the ritual is about the guy taking the oath and the oath he is taking, not about glorifying the object upon which he takes the oath. Like I said, he could swear by a bag of potato chips without altering the ceremony’s import. That is, if chips were as important to him as his religion, and that’s important to *him*, not us.
Keith Ellison isn't POTUS. There's a whole world of difference and I doubt you would be so accepting if a POTUS swore on the koran..I'm quite sure the US populace would frown on it.
