That reminds me of my cousin stationed in SoKor and I could not get anything straight even over e-mail. But he hinted in a series of codes we invented that mostly everyone on base there hates the kenyan p=resident, especially when he visited.
During WWII my uncle (actually all my uncles) was in the Navy. One of them survived Pearl Harbor and spent the rest of the War sailing back and forth across the Pacific.
When he wrote home, my grandmother would gather the remainder of the family together and read us the letter. In one of his letters he asked "Is Betty Lyn still engaged to Philip?" Since I was 5 years old at the time, everybody was really puzzled. My gruff grandfather said, "Stupid women. He's telling us that he's heading toward the Philipines. Can't you figure out anything?"
Sure enough, after the War was over, we found out that his ship had been assigned to evacuate the gold out of the Philipine Treasury and transport it to Seattle for safekeeping.
