SALISBURY — Rowan-Salisbury Schools officials suspended a North Rowan High School teacher Monday while investigating an incident caught on camera where the teacher told a student he could be arrested for speaking ill of President Barack Obama.
In a nearly 10-minute YouTube video shot by a student in the classroom, Tanya Dixon-Neely, a social studies teacher, told students criticism of the president could lead to jail time.
“Do you realize that people were arrested for saying things bad about Bush?” she said of former President Bush. “Do you realize you are not supposed to slander the president?”
Dixon-Neely has been suspended with pay, according to Rowan-Salisbury School System Spokeswoman Rita Foil.
On Friday, Foil said the incident can be a learning experience.
“The Rowan-Salisbury School System expects all students and employees to be respectful in the school environment and for all teachers to maintain their professionalism in the classroom. This incident should serve as an education for all teachers to stop and reflect on their interaction with students.”
A Salisbury Post reporter went to Dixon-Neely's home for comment this morning, but no one answered the door. Calls to her number have gone unanswered and there is no answering machine.
The video went viral over the weekend and viewership jumped from about 1,000 views to more than 168,000 Monday morning.
Strange the principle called this ‘a learning experience’, much like obamma himself called an earlier controversy.

people got arrested for speaking badly about bush? really? how many! what are the names! the crimes? if this was true, half of the democrat party would have been arrested, including mosst of the Senate adn the House, and Hollywood would be a ghost town.
Exactly...and North Carolina property tax payers are picking up the tab. Sweet, indeed. Some 'punishment'...

While the kid was right..he was also a jerk. Constantly yelling out (the entire class was out of control), threatening to call his dad, admitting he did no work in the class. Everyone sounds bad in the audio. Kid did have the facts on his side though.

The Wife taught in a Panther-controlled Public school for a few years. This is NOTHING compared to some of things they said, and anyone that DARED to criticize them was an OBVIOUS RACIST.
The wife finally decided to play her certified American Indian Card on one of these racist whackjobs one afternoon, and they had NO IDEA how to respond to it.
Luckily, most of these people are retired out, now.
Libs tend to get bent out of shape in any debate and call for censorship of opposing opinions, as in this case. That’s why they repeatedly shout down conservative speakers on college campuses. When the facts aren’t with you it’s frustrating, and in their case, even maddening.
