Why would somebody be this involved in his roommate's sex life?
Half of "college life" is about sex. The other half is about drinking. I haven't researched it much, but I think this perspective - a "treasured American tradition" by many Americans at this point - started a long, long time ago. It was certainly not what college was about when the nation was founded.
While the video was made in poor taste, we're dealing with current day college students here. Just watch some TV or type "college sex" into google to get an idea of how idiotically focused on sex MANY Americans are. I'm not defending Ravi making the video, but his mistake comes from the tendency of young people today to be quick to video and not understand the legal circumstances of a given situation. In general it is a great thing to be able to record videos, but one must always make sure that one is on the right side of the law when doing so. Young people also think nothing of publicizing information of all kinds (let's call this facebook mania idiocy). Publicizing something, of course, is not something to be done at a whim. Remember the IM conversation that zberg of facebook had very early on where he called people using his site "dumb f#@ks" for posting private information (amazingly largely sanitized from the internet); IMHO, it's indicative of the shallow and imprudent thinking regarding privacy that is too common today amongst the young.
What normal person tapes a homo having sex? Does this strike you as normal behavior or a jealous spat?
Again, look at the society we live in.
Many States have decriminalized immoralities that were illegal not long ago. The media bombards us with immorality. Acceptable language and behavior knows few bounds.
Also, note that people do not pay too much attention to what laws are enacted by State legislatures; they certainly don't study their State laws to familiarize themselves with them.
This makes a situation where young adults often do not know what is legal and what is illegal. They are often very confused about legality and morality and have precious few accurate and honest sources to learn from.
Back when our laws were within the bounds of morality, it was fairly easy to live within the law by simply doing what was morally right. Today, many people are completely oblivious to literally thousands of situations that they could find themselves in where they would be subject to criminal prosecution and civil liability.
Each generation is becoming more confused and more immoral.
