The Avengers good news spelled bad news for Battleship, which debuted to a dismal $9 million on Friday. That puts the board game-inspired action film on pace for a $26 million weekend a result that Universal clearly didnt have in mind when it green-lighted the $209 million picture. By comparison, the years other big expensive flop, Disneys John Carter, mustered a slightly better $30.2 million its first weekend. Both movies starred Taylor Kitsch, whose young career is getting off to an incredibly unfortunate start.

Even dumber premise: old battleship (decommissioned in 1992, and which has not moved under her own power since then, which has been operating as a floating museum since 1999) has fuel in her bunkers, can be gotten running by a handful of old guys in under an hour, and HAS LIVE AMMUNITION FOR THE MAIN GUNS ON BOARD for just such an eventuality.
Oh, I saw it with my wife on Saturday. We enjoyed it immensely. Great mindless shoot-em-up, great special effects. Just don't expect the plot to make any sense at all.
and those weapons would be effective somehow against advanced alien robots? Those things must be really slow.
Or even a little 40mm projectile with an antimatter warhead.
