Chris took us to see the movie “Battleship” tonight. It’s a far-fetched science fiction movie about a small fleet of aliens attacking earth and which got into a naval battle off Pearl Harbor.

The aliens isolated a couple of Arleigh Burke-class guided missile destroyers, sinking the USS Sampson and then the crew of the USS John Paul Jones was stranded after it was destroyed and sunk. Led by its skipper, a screw-up prone young Lt who had assumed command after the Capt and Exec officer were killed, the crew made it back to base and found the only fighting ship left was the USS Missouri, which was moored at Pearl as a museum ship, and they decided to take her out and to battle the aliens.

The chief engineer of the John Paul Jones had his doubts and said he wouldn’t even know how to get up steam on the old battleship even if it was seaworthy, and they didn’t have an experienced crew to man her anyway. That’s when a crew of grizzled old WWII salts began stepping forward and volunteered to go to battle one more time. Guess they had been aboard the battleship as museum curators and guides.

The old vets snapped to and manned their sea and battle stations and that’s where I lost it and the tears started flowing. Sheesh, I mean who cries during science fiction movies?

Then the old salts lit off the boilers and brought the Missouri to life and it was off to do battle. And they of course won the day. The screw-up Lt drove that big old battleship like it was a rodeo horse, turning brodies and jerking it to a full stop by dropping anchor, etc, to evade the alien salvos. Everything was unlikely fantasy but still enjoyable if you like movies about naval battles and heroes.

After the movie was over, a young man stopped and asked me if I was a navy vet. He thanked me for my service and then told me he was leaving in a few days himself for navy bootcamp, so I got a chance to thank him for his service. And then his father walked up and thanked me and told me how proud he was of his son for serving his country. Sheesh. Teared up again. Hurts getting old.

Woo hoo!!

And this just in:

$50 from Mississippi!!

And a $20.00 mail-in pledge from Georgia!!

Thank you very much, Mississippi and Georgia!!

FReepers are the greatest!!

I’m so happy you had such a wonderful night out at the movies, and that you met the nice young man and his patriot father. There’s still a lot of good in America. Wonderful, good patriots in our CA, too!

You might be a first for crying during a science fiction flick, but hey, that’s okay..lol. “Battleship” doesn’t sound anything like the usual SF story line.

I see we had another anti-FReeper idiot that even had to invoke Hitler. Dayum, they’re rabid and equally dumb.

God bless and keep you.

LOL! I just found out that Hubby put “Battleship” on the Netflix list two days ago. We’re good to go.

Thank you for the review, sir.

That's one of the best movie reviews I've read, thanks Jim.

Good to hear about the proud father and son also.
