A lab report released Thursday showed that Trayvon Martin was shot from close range, probably with the gun pressed against his chest. The new information may bolster George Zimmerman's argument that the two men were locked in combat, and Zimmerman shot the unarmed teenager to protect his own life. How easy is it to kill a man in a fistfight?

That’s because punching someone unconscious—or killing them—usually results from the rotational forces placed on the head, not from the direct impact of the fist itself. Yeh, sure, the "lucky punch", or the beatdown with fists and feet by someone, can happen.
But it's not as likely as it could be with someone that has trained to do it.

I know a guy who can kill a man with his breath.
In the Army we learned to break the fibula with a swift short kick, thus putting the enemy on the ground, where it’s much easier to disable or kill them. A girl of 10 could take down a large man that way if she does it right.
I know a guy that did a few years in prison for killing his best friend in a drunken fight outside a bar.
According to this site, three of the top ten most common murder weapons are essentially by ‘hand’.... Number 3 is by ‘personal body weapons’ such as fist, feet, head, Number 6 is by asphyxiation and Number 9 is by holding the victim’s head under water. Number 9 might not have been applicable for this case but the other two sure are valid.

A person with an agility, strength, and size that they could inflict damage or death of another should be considered to be in possession of a deadly weapon, same as a handgun. If he uses his “weapon”, it should be the same as if he had used gun or a knife.
Individuals are given vastly different physical abilities. The equalizer is the gun. Why shouldn’t a granny be able to defend herself from a thug? Why shouldn’t I?

So Zimmerman is getting his head slammed into the concrete, he knows he can stop it if he shoots, he does not know if the head slamming will stop if he doesn’t shoot.
That head smack was brutal. He’s lucky he’s alive.
