The pilot wanted to show off the Sukhoi's superb handling abilities so he dropped the plane to 6,000 feet, the nearest mountain was 7,000 feet, no matter how good its handling no plane can overcome that math.

Of course they want to blame it on the pilot. Couldn’t possibly be the fault of the vaunted Rusky engineering and manufacturing.

In fairness at first I thought the same but one of the Indonesians on board the first flight, an airline official, said the plane handled superbly and there’s no getting away from the fact that immediately before the crash the pilot asked permission to drop to 6,000 feet in a mountainous area, the next thing we know is that the plane is found slapped into the side of a mountain, a mountain 7,000 feet high.
Hard to escape the obvious conclusion.

Of course they want to blame it on the pilot. Couldnt possibly be the fault of the vaunted Rusky engineering and manufacturing. And the Rusky pilots are just as sloppy as Russian engineers.

As a former AF pilot, I can absolutely tell you that they don’t call it “Min Safe Altitude” for grins and giggles.
This pilot got careless and stupid.....and killed himself and a bunch of people in the process. No excuse.

Totally believable either way. From what I’ve heard about Russian pilots and about Russian engineering, the cause could have been either or both.

Reminds me of the Tu-144 (Russia’s super sonic transport) during the Paris Airshow back in the 70’s. The pilot pushed it a bit too hard and it snapped in two.

P.S. Love the picture of the fox on the plane in the water. Is that the old drug smugler’s a/c wreck off the West End of Grand Bahama Island?

Did the Ruski pilot try to roll the aircraft like the guy who rolled the Boeing 707 decades ago?

Deja vu: 100 years ago some schmucks did the same thing with a new ocean liner - the Titanic.
