Across country, black pastors weigh in on Obama's same-sex marriage support

Addressing his large, mostly black congregation on Sunday morning, the Rev. Wallace Charles Smith did not mince words about where he stood on President Barack Obama's newly announced support for same-sex marriage: The church is against it, he said, prompting shouts of "Amen!" from the pews.

And yet Smith hardly issued a full condemnation of the president.

"We may disagree with our president on this one issue," Smith said from the pulpit of the Shiloh Baptist Church in Washington. "But we will keep him lifted up in prayer. ... Pray for President Barack Obama."

And Smith said there were much bigger challenges facing the black community - "larger challenges that we have to struggle with" - bringing his full congregation to its feet, with many more amens.

Days after Obama announced his personal support for same-sex marriage, pastors across the country offered their Sunday-morning opinions on the development, with the words of black pastors - a key base of support for Obama in 2008, that is also largely opposed to gay marriage - carrying special weight in a presidential election year. But black pastors were hardly monolithic in addressing Obama's remarks.

In Baltimore, Emmett Burns, a politically well-connected black minister who said he supported Obama in 2008, held an event at Rising Sun Baptist Church to publicly withdraw support from the president over Obama's same-sex marriage support.

Some black pastors stick by their morals and ditch Obama while others have no morals and continue to support the "First Gay President".

If Obama ditched wide load and married Reggie Love they would still vote for him.

At first I thought Obama would survive this with the black community but I have been talking to a lot of black religious people and they are POed.

I think Obama just committed political suicide and the Newsweak Cover is not going to help.

No, I'd say their prayers are spot on, it's just that they're praying to a false god, a false prophet, The Adversary.
They're just to corrupted to know it or care either way.

No surprise that he essentially endorsed him from the pulpit regardless.

I thougt it was extraordinarily foolish the way many in the blogosphere predicted an erosion in black support because of his announced support for unnatural unions. There’s nothing he could do to lose that support.

I am grateful to BHO for one thing: providing clarity as to what god many “religious” folk really worship - Many Catholics, Protestants and Jews have all shown that their first obligation is to Caesar.

I pray along with them.

Where did the KKK come from? The Democrat party.
Who frequently was lynched in the South with blacks? Republican sympathizers.
Dred Scott? Democrats.
Segregation? Democrats.

It has long been known that Obama supports partial birth abortion and even opposed the born alive infant protection act, something even naral did not object to. He appointed eugenicists and raging commies as czars in his admin. He is a sociopath. I fail to see how the gay thing should suddenly make him unacceptable to Christians who supported him before. These Pastors are not deep thinkers. All of them that supported Obama are simply morons.

Black pastors who preach in favor of same-sex marriage know they may pay a price if they take Obama's position, says Bishop Carlton Pearson.

Yes. They'll face judgement.

The Chicago-based black minister says he lost his church building and about 6,000 members when he began preaching that gays and lesbians were accepted by God.

As well he should have.

Its his job to get gays and lesbians and all of us plain-vanilla sinners saved and filled with the holy spirit. Its not his job to tell them that they can keep going down the same road. If he thinks that then he has seriously lost the plot.

"I take the Bible seriously, just not literally,"

Then he needed to lose his pulpit. He needs to take his place out in the pews until he gets the whole salvation thing.

...it's also the Golden Rule," [Obama] said. "Treat others the way you would want to be treated."

Of course. No kidding. But don't offer them some counterfeit marriage that doesn't exist, has never existed, and will never exist whatever laws they manage to jam through a supine Congress.

It’s sad the Republicans have so much to work with and yet dont.

Literally, the party of stupid vs. the party of evil.

It’s really no different than conservatives supporting a pro-abortion, pro-socialized medicine, pro gun control, pro global warming candidate like Romney.

Most here are adamantly opposed to things that Romney has supported based upon his record, yet they still support him.

As far as I’m concerned they are both turds of the highest order.

“....And still vote for him because he’s Black”

As opposed to Romney, a man who was a member of a church that discriminated against blacks until the late 1970s, and who actively supported abortion and gay "rights"?

Black Preachers are not much on same sex marriage.

That is what saved Maryland from passing it last year> When the black preschers in PG County came out against it.

This year in spite of opposition the Bi-sexuals in our Lagislature passed it anyway. Now we are having a petition drive to get the referendum on the ballot. As far as I am concerned those who passed this bill are as bad as the freaks who want it. I hope each District remembers the name and vote their Representative made. I know Mr. Bohannon lost my vote.

Race is more important to some people than anything else.

The is more true for blacks than any other Americans.

Romney is not campaigning on these positions and there is no reason to think that this will be his agenda if he is elected.
