May 12, 2012 JC Penney Features Same-Sex Couple in May Catalogue

Fifteen years ago, when advertisers got wind that Ellen DeGeneres was going to “come out” on her popular sitcom show “Ellen,” some advertisers fled.

One of them was JC Penney. Flash forward to one of their newest clothing ads in the May catalog. It features a real-life same-sex couple. The photograph is of two models identified as Wendi and Maggie holding their two daughters. Both women appear be wearing wedding bands.

Quietly, gradually and largely without protest, advertising is starting to reflect new attitudes and new realities about who we are. “Our cultures change and I think the broader consumer and the spending power in the country has become more progressive,” Eric Bovim, CEO of the ad firm Gibraltar Associates said.

There are gay couples on prime-time television shows, and now gay couples are coming out of Madison Avenue’s closet, which, according to Bovim, gives way to a new target audience.

“I think companies that are successful in marketing nowadays are trying to appeal to a progressive customer,” Bovim said. “They understand that customers are looking for social values, community, visionary aspirations. These are things that they buy into.”

Another previously unseen group in advertisements that now is appearing more and more is interracial couples, reflecting the rising number of mixed-race marriages in the United States.

Advertisers are sending different subliminal messages.

Similar to the Disney boycott by Evangelicals we need a boycott of JC Penney. Wake up America and take action against this modern-day perversion that is being mainstreamed with businesses and movies supported with your tax dollars.

Focus your marketing on 2% of the population. Yeah, that’s the ticket.

But Gays and Lesbians make up a disproportionate percentage of the population with fat wallets.

Well, that tells me I'm not welcome in JC Penney store. So, I have no reason to shop there again. Glad to know that.

“They understand that customers are looking for social values, community, visionary aspirations.

Actually when I used to shop at Penny's it was for shirts, shoes, and suit's.

Well, how much do they sell those for? I see this company shutting down sooner rather than later.

..advertising is starting to reflect new attitudes and new realities..

Here's a new attitude and reality for you. I was an occasional shopper at J.C. Penney; now, I never shop there.

For more than they can begotten by Reid and pelosi and gang 24 hours a day without leaving the house.

Um, I've noticed that gays don't generally like JC Penneys clothes. Don't they lean more towards the high priced designer stuff? Penneys is way too conservative in style.

My guess is this will be the nail in their coffin. First stop having sales, then cater to a tiny minority of the population who doesn't patronize your stores in the first place.

What about some polygamist “families”?

How about a man that loves his dog a little too much?

I’m sure some incest would fall under the “equality” canard too.

I used to order a lot of clothes when they had online sales. I even have an JCPenney card (which I will now be destroying).

I guess I’ll have to look at Macy’s web site now.

With incest we're now on the cusp of step two.

I no longer know who, but what we are is doomed.

I doubt if they will be successful in up-scaling their image. Even though their clothing quality is higher than their blue collar image would suggest, snobby progressives aren’t ever going to want a J.C.Penny label on their clothes.
