Bye bye unemployment benefits
By Tami Luhby @CNNMoney May 11, 2012: 3:17 PM ET

NEW YORK (CNNMoney) -- More than 200,000 long-term jobless Americans will lose their unemployment checks this week, when eight states roll off the federal extended benefits program.

Nearly half of them live in California, and the rest reside in Florida, Illinois, North Carolina, Colorado, Connecticut, Pennsylvania and Texas.

The federal extended benefits program has provided the jobless with up to 20 weeks of unemployment checks after they've run through their state and their federal emergency benefits, which together last up to 79 weeks.

But the extended benefits program is expiring throughout the country as the economy improves. To be eligible for these benefits, a state must show that its unemployment rate is at least 10% higher than it was in at least one of the past three years.

It sucks being on it. Must suck even more being forced off.

Meanwhile, the rookie Hussein rubs elbows with the 1-percenters.

I think Rush had a called on this subject today. Appears the asshat clown in the WH is determined to get the unemployment number below 8% before Nov 6.

The States are out of money because the Union pension funds are taking a great portion. Period.

Like Newt said, "hey--99 weeks is an associates's degree." Or a certificate in a marketable skill.

Too many 'Merkins sit on their ass and say "Hell no I ain't workin' for no chump change."

It is weirdly a win-win for Obama. it will probably push down unemployment as people are forced look for and take jobs, and at the same time, he can complain about mean republicans who don’t care about the jobless...

Ending 99 weeks unemployment is a bad thing?

I was of the opinion that the conservative position was no extensions, period?

Now they will go on welfare, faux disability, or find/create a job.

The lib politicians will probably try to bring in “the dole” next—unending unemployment benefits. Just another bad idea from Europe along with all the other bad ideas . . .

The areas of highest unemployment on the map have large population of illegals. Our government has been doing a great job of giving taxpayer money to non citizens via unemployment benefits and fraudulent tax returns.

Too many 'Merkins sit on their ass and say "Hell no I ain't workin' for no chump change."

With 14 to 18 percent unemployment and no money to move a family to an area of the country with better job prospects here is what that "chump" as you call him is faced with.

Save up enough for gas money, leave the family behind. Sleep in the car and hope to find work.

Comments like this make me really mad. It is not hard to see what reality is out there. You sound like you believe Obama's line about unemployment numbers.

It has been and continues to be misery for a lot of people that once had good paying jobs. While the government wastes billions we can't even keep taking care of our own till something turns. And people blast at the unemployed.

This country is sick!!

And remember...the Unemployment records only count those who have worked, lost their jobs, and filed for unemployment. Think of all the new college grads who have never worked, are sitting at home with Ma and Pa (or demonstrating with the Occupiers) who are also not being counted among the Unemployed, along with those who have slipped off the rolls after 99 weeks. The percent of unemployed people that this administration tells the public is such a sham!

well, since they`ll be back on the street seeking employment, won`t that push the U3 number of unemployed back up? Or do those people just drop from the radR screen altogether?
