In 1968, Holland, Dozier and Holland left Motown to start their own label, and Berry Gordy sued them for breach of contract. The suit and resulting countersuit were the music industry’s version of Jarndyce v. Jarndyce from Charles Dickens’ Bleak House. It went on for nine years before the court had H-D-H pay Gordy a token settlement.

Thanks to the litigation, H-D-H was forced to use the names Edythe Wayne and Wayne/Dunbar to write their songs for their own label. They had two hits in 1970 for their artists.

Chairmen of the Board: “Give Me Just a Little More Time”

This one is groundbreaking because it is about impotence. They didn’t have Viagra in those days.

Freda Payne: “Band of Gold”

By 1974 they went their own separate ways.

H-D-H was inducted into the Songwriter’s Hall of Fame in 1988 and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1990. The threesome changed music history.

In 1968, the team of Holland, Dozier and Holland ended their partnership with the Supremes. This one sounded a bit too much like “Reflections”, and it didn’t make the Top 10. The Supremes: “Forever Came Today”

I don't recall this song, although by 1968, I wasn't listening to much Top 40 anymore. Later in the year, the Supremes scored with Love Child, a song that describes what it was like to grow up in Communist China.

Corn and beans are sproutin’ Starwberries, onion and garlic are rioting. Potatoes are kind’a timid. Sunflowers are reaching for the sky and the pepper beds are about 3/4 done. I think it’s gonna be a good harvest this year .... and I still owe you a FReepmail!

Aloha Night Owl! ((HUGS))

Both rain and sun today..... but of course it rained again when I was bringing in my freshly dried laundry.

Hoping the weekend brings fair weather for both of us.

WOW! That’s a lot of stuff to take care of. Everything seems to be growing quite well. Maybe the potatoes will get over their timidity and grow big and strong.

That it did for sure, though it wasn’t played like Heat Wave.

Sidenote .. my cavorting summertime youth was spent at the RI shore, with a close group of regulars, including a lovely couple who owned the guesthouse
where we gals stayed every weekend, John and Mimi Maccione.

John’s brother, Jimmy, whom I’d met, was supposedly a well known maitre ‘d/ concierge type, get-you-anything kinda guy .. possibly in NYC ... and we
were were led to believe that Jimmy Mack was written for him, so we had a special affinity for it.
