You are right about the reality of adoption today: most birth mothers “pick” the family where their child is placed, and many stay in touch thereafter. But the reality and the perception are quite different. When you ask women who have had abortions why they did not consider adoption(and, believe me, I have asked), they usually answer that it would involve placing the child in the home of unknown strangers who might well molest and abuse him or her.
