Ermey is a former Staff Sergeant. Jones made him an honorary Gunny as a PR move. His disability pay is based on the rank of Staff Sergeant not Gunnery Sergeant. Yeah, he has made quite a career out of a one time MOS gig. Last I saw him he was making milkshakes in a diner.
Heck, Hollywood is built on "images'...lol.
