You are assuming the “rebels” in Hollywood had something called a “spine”....
It is easy to rail against a system that doesn’t kill dissidents....
When I was young I ran across some info about the Soviet famine of the 30’s. I wanted to verify it so I went to the library and found confirmation. I asked my parents about this and they, educated and very decent people, were clueless. A lesson was learned. Take nothing for granted.
