To me a cult differentiates itself from other religions not through theological beliefs - but via the adherence they insist upon from their members.

A cult wants 100% commitment of resources. If you own a van - the cult owns a van. If you own a 50 cal machine gun - the cult owns a 50 cal machine gun.

A religion usually only wants 10%.

Perhaps orthodox/biblical Christianity puts more stress on the voluntary than Mormons do. However the former is no stranger to calls for “total commitment.”

What do you consider a organization that requires that you not affiliate “with any group or individual that teach practices that are not in agreement with church teachings” in order to attend its temple?

What do you consider an organization that shuns you if you leave it, and makes sure that the others in the organization shun you too (and see what would happen if THEY left)?

Sometimes a spade has to be called a spade.

You distinguish a cult as one that only wants 100% of your belongings -

What do you call an organization that demands you give up your children for two years?
