Residents wonder if Flint Township needs new brand

FLINT TOWNSHIP, Mich. - Should Flint Township change its name?

Some residents believe the community's reputation suffers when people don't make a distinction between the township and its neighbor, the city of Flint, which is known for a high crime rate and chronically poor finances. A state-appointed emergency manager now runs Flint.

"I think the issues with Flint are Flint's issues, and they are made Flint Township's by simply having Flint in the name," Chuck Hughes, a former township treasurer, told The Flint Journal. "We're at the mercy of Flint to fix their image."

Hughes, township Supervisor Karyn Miller and local business leaders are members of a committee that will discuss a new name and explore the possibility of the township becoming a city. The next meeting is May 23 and is open to the public.

A new name or a switch to city status ultimately would be up to voters. Miller said discussions are in the early stage and any changes are "well down the road."

Hughes lists some possible names, such as Bishop, which is the name of the local airport, or West Point. He notes that East Detroit became Eastpointe in 1992 to escape the shadow of the larger, troubled neighbor. Flint Township's population is 31,000.

West Point so they can be like Eastpointe? From what little time I've been in "the township" as it's referred to by locals, Eastpointe is a rather apt comparison. That's not a compliment.

Never been to Flint, but when I hear that name I automatically think of Mark Farner and Grand Funk Railroad.

Moore wasn't from Flint. He was from the much more middle to upper middle class Davison.

He now lived in a mansion on Torch Lake.

Micheal Moore lived in a town near Flint. It is a somewhat upscale town. They do not like their hometown boy.

My mistake. I thought he said he was from Flint. I think he has talked of Flint, and how Republican policies have destroyed it, or some such liberal pablum.

I always wonder what liberals think about places such as Flint, Detroit, Camden, East St. Louis, Newark, et. al. These places have been run by liberal Democrats for generations. Yet these places are some of the most God forsaken places in America. If liberal Democrat policies were the answer to the problems of these places, wouldn’t they be glittering jewels of prosperity and high qualities of life?????

Mark Farner and Grand Funk Railroad? And I sure don't think of asshats like michael moore.
Not me. When I think of Flint, I think of Bart Markel and Jay Springsteen and others of the Michigan Mafia in the 60s & 70s. Talent, nerve and skills that only the best of the best have. Damn I miss them today.

I could have sworn the scum was from Davison. (Both my long-term memory and Wikipedia back this up.)

I distinctly remember, growing up in next-door Goodrich, an odious smell coming from due north....

I'm so sorry! I was so keyed in to Michael Moore (discussed the post after yours) that I didn't see you were talking about GFR!!!

(I'm hanging my Flintoid head in shame.)
