Best episode of Gomer Pyle: When Sgt. Hacker bets Carter that he can’t go 24 hours without yelling at Pyle. Carter finally drives way off into the desert and screams his head off. I nearly pee myself every time I see it. Frank Sutton= genius.

I like the one where Gomer goes too a diner in town and eats something that makes him have wild dreams and is sleep walking chewing out Carter. Of course in real life USMC sleep walkers get a medical discharge. Still it was halarious.

My favorite ones were the few which had Earnest T. Bass in them.

I like the Darlins. They are actually a band called The Dillards. The boys minus Denver Pyle are really great Bluegrass musicans.

re: You’d enjoy the Mayberry Days Festival in Mt. Airy, NC

How about Mayberry in Star Trek?

That episode is awesome. It’s fun to see Carter cowed by Pyle after he eats the Welsh rarebit and sleep-yells. The way Gomer breaks his normally sweet character is genius.
And there’s some truth to it. Welsh rarebit is traditionally made with some kind of booze IIRC.

Yeah, Griffith’s leftism always struck me as odd..especially when one considers his southern rural roots.

He's a self-hating Southerner. He'll embrace his Southern roots whenever it's advantageous, but there's always a hint of embarrassment. This goes all the way back to his stand-up comedy. He would exaggerate his accent, play himself as a hick to get a laugh, the same way someone will make a joke at their own expense--so people will laugh with him instead of at him.

Howard Morris (who played Ernest T. Bass and directed several episodes of TAGS) said that when they were on the set and heard of JFK being shot in Dallas, Griffith's first reaction was "The damn Southerners!"

Even Morris, a yankee from NY (I think), was taken aback by that.

You can get that recording (about football) on Amazon (less than $6.00). It is on this album Wit & Wisdom of Andy Griffith [Original recording reissued, Original recording remastered]

He was funny in No Time for Sergeants too. TCM plays that movie from time to time.

You can ask Jim if you want, but I believe any Hee Haw related thread is required to have pictures of Lisa Todd.

Flagg: "Pierce, that was dumb, very dumb. But...you've met your match...in...me."

OMG - I saw that episode just now on TV LAND - but Flagg said it to Sydney Freedman and not Pierce (but Pierce was in the scene). It was the episode where the bombadier thought he was Jesus Christ.

“Floyd the Barber’s name was Floyd Lawson for most of the series”

Lawson is a common name in the Mt. Airy part of NC.

Otis the drunk was in No Time for Sergeants also. He was the airborne soldier that staggers by in the nightclub and Andy shouts out “hey infantry”.

No, that was definitely NOT "Otis" in "No Time for Sergeants."

Regards,

Not sure if it’s been posted as a thread. Doug Dillard a Bluegrass Banjo player formerly of The Dillards aka one of The Darling Brothers on Andy Griffin Show died Wednesday of a lung infection at age 75.
