And past and present Chinese history. He was incredibly brave, but he ran a huge risk of incurring fatal Party displeasure. Hoping the US would save him was a very iffy plan. If he had garnered just a bit less publicity, he'd have disappeared and we wouldn't be talking about the US role.

The more I learn about this “activist”, the more I am convinced that he is a loud-mouthed, demanding sorehead of the Keith Olbermann variety.

Every society has people like that, and they invariably piss off the authorities, then play martyr if and when the authorities have enough of their noise and sit on them.

The Soviet Union used to be very big on embracing such fools in the US, yet from our point of view they were real dorks, and often criminal ones.

This is not an apologetic for China, which as is plainly obvious has its basket full of bad problems, bad solutions, and general inefficient oppression and corruption.

But just to point out that just because someone is in opposition neither means that they are virtuous nor sensible, and we need to discriminate between legitimate criticism being suppressed and the rantings of Keith Olbermann type soreheads.
