This remarkable speech should be read by all Americans today, for Burke's observations about the colonies' great burst of economic production, outstripping Great Britain's, the colonists' "spirit of liberty," and his observations on the question of slavery will contribute greatly to today's discussions on such matters as well.
Edmund Burke's speech is a worthwhile read in it's entirety. In gentlemanly fashion he calls out the King and Parliament for being fools. There was nothing to gain and all to lose in a war against the American colonists.
They had gone about doing truly amazing things without planning, impositions, coercions, regulations, or direction of imperfect persons in positions of power in government. Burke recognized that it was that "spirit of liberty," rooted largely in their religious differing religious convictions, which underlay their accomplishments.
Too bad that the small-minded pseudo-intellectuals who call themselves "progressives" today were not as wise as Burke, Tocqueville, and America's intellectual giants we call "the Founders."
