Blind legal activist Chen Guangcheng said a U.S. official told him that Chinese authorities threatened to beat his wife to death had he not left the American Embassy.
Speaking by phone from his hospital room in Beijing on Wednesday night, a shaken Chen told The Associated Press that U.S. officials relayed the threat from the Chinese side. After six days in hiding, Chen emerged from the embassy Wednesday after U.S. officials said China had assured his safety.
His account contrasts with earlier comments by Chen's supporters saying that he had vowed to stay in China to continue his activism. He said he now fears for his safety and wants to leave.
A U.S. official denies knowledge of the threat but said Chen was told his family would be sent back home if he stayed in the embassy.

Geesh, Chen resisted the Chinese for seven years even enduring house arrest and torture for seven years. A week of threats delivered by the United States broke him. This does not reflect well on our State Department.
“Holy smokes, is the United States in the business of relaying Chinese threats in order to get the activist to cave-in.”?
It appears to be the case.
...and you know how Obamah feels about that!
I don’t know what is going on between the State Department and China but something needs to be done to protect these people who came to our embassy for help.
We had an apparent defection attempt recently by a regional Chinese government official, who appears to have been turned away. Now we have a human rights activist going to the US Embassy and apparently was also turned away. (Yes, I know people “voluntarily” left, but it’s obvious something happened behind the scenes.) Much about these cases is unknown and may never be known, and I don’t want to make attacks when I don’t have facts. but this sure looks bad for the United States.
I get a very sick feeling. I hope I am wrong but it appears the United States under Obama has just told human rights activists everywhere “We will not support you.”
This is the type of government-of-thugs that Thomas Friedman of the NYT wishes we could have here...
bttt
Who said anything about relaying or delivering anything from the Chinese? That threat could have been made up by Embassy management to get him to leave because the whole incident was becoming too much of an embarrassment.
cbs’s first report today was TASS-worthy material.
I love how they even claimed Chen wanted to kiss Hillary.
Unbelievable.
Speaking of Hillary....wasn’t there a time in the 90’s when she actually described the one child policy as a model of efficiency?
Google cannot seem to help me with this...funny that.
When NK refugees climbed in the fance of the Japanese Embassy in Beijing, there was a firestorm of outrage in Japan when Japanese diplomats in China handed the NK refugees over to the Chinese, who then handed them back to NK for execution.
Are we as good? Will we hold Obama/Hillary accountable...? Because Obama has gone and done THE SAME THING.
Aren’t they always justifying, “humane treatment” of Mexican invaders with references to the Statue of Liberty, and so on...?
We’ve been had.
Who doubts they were trying to wreck the 2nd Amendment with all those secret machine-gun smugglings to Mexican drug-dealers?
