At least six people have been killed in several large explosions in the Afghan capital Kabul, shortly after US President Barack Obama paid a surprise visit to the country.
Sediq Sediqi, a spokesperson for Afghanistan's interior ministry, said one of the first blasts, a suicide car bomb, occurred on Wednesday morning near the Jalalabad road, a main thoroughfare of the city.
Sediqi said the blast killed four people inside a civilian car, as well as a passerby and a security guard of a nearby building.
The Afghan Taliban claimed responsibility for the car bomb attack which police said targeted a housing compound for westerners in the city. The Jalalabad road area is also home to several foreign military bases.
"One of our mujahideen detonated his car in front of a military base," Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid told the Reuters news agency in a phone call.
"Other mujahideen are inside the base fighting. There are very heavy casualties for the enemy.
"It is a message to Obama that he and his forces are never welcomed in Afghanistan and that we will continue our resistance until all the occupiers are either dead or leave our country," Mujahid later told the AFP news agency.
'Lockdown'
The initial blasts occurred between 1:30-2:00 GMT (6:00-6:30am local time), Al Jazeera's Bernard Smith reported from the capital.
"The area that seems to have been targeted is what is known as Green Village and this is on the Jalalabad road on the way out of Kabul," Smith said.
"It is home to a lot of foreign workers and we are told that at least two suicide bombers tried to get into the Green Village. We are not sure if they managed to get in.
"We have been told that six people have been killed and there are 16 other people injured. There are children among the casualties."
At least three explosions were heard, witnesses said. An Afghan official said the blasts were followed by sporadic shooting.
Our correspondent said another explosion was then heard at around 03:30GMT (8:00am local time). "This attack is still ongoing," he added.
Obama left Kabul just hours before the attacks after signing a strategic agreement with Afghan President Hamid Karzai.
The US embassy in Kabul, said its embassy was "under lockdown" and warned staff to "take cover, move away from the windows".
"Duck and cover here at the embassy. Not a drill - avoid the area," the US embassy said on Twitter.

Instead, he is with drawing a little at a time and making it look like the Fgahnies are taking the lead and control on all this with the US in a support role.
Mark my words that Shiite Hole is going to be left to another President as part of their legacy and I hope it’s done better than Nixon, though he did what he had to do.

“Mr. Gusty” blows wind in Afghanistan and the natives get restless. Geeesh! He could have made this campaign speech from the Oval Office. If he really wanted to spend some more taxpayer money, he could have had this Obama rally in Vegas for 800 grand. A lot cheaper than going all the way to Afghanistan. In Vegas, he could have had a few clowns and a couple of mind readers thrown in for a few extra bucks. I think going to Afghanistan was a little over the top for Obamabo.

Without a lot of fanfare, Obama has lost both Iraq, to Iran and Afghanistan, to the Taliban, no matter what comes out of his lying mouth. Obama is no friend of the American military, the American people or the American nation. More American treasure and American blood will be spilled to ensure his re=election, which is the only thing he cares about, so....that he can become the modern “Hitler.Stalin” in his second term. America, Americans beware of wolves in sheep clothing. Obama wants the Taliban to carry the day, no matter what he speaks out of his “hate America” mouth.
