INDIANAPOLIS (AP) Singer and activist Harry Belafonte will be given this year's Living Legend Award by the Indiana Black Expo in July.
Black Expo President and Chief Executive Tanya Bell says the term legend is sometimes casually applied to celebrities, but says Belafonte is genuinely legendary. The 85-year-old performer has pushed for political and social change for years.
Belafonte worked closely with the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr., and once bailed him out of jail in Birmingham, Ala. Belafonte also helped fund the inter-racial "Freedom Rides" that challenged Southern segregation, and helped organize the 1963 March on Washington.
Indiana Black Expo reported attendance of nearly 242,000 people at its 11-day Summer Celebration event last in Indianapolis. Belafonte is scheduled to attend the corporate luncheon on July 20.

Wow,I think I’ll be busy for that one! A guy who sings about counting bananas calls the Secretary of State the “house negro”.Yah,that gives this lightweight clown *tons* of credibility.
Hey,states will do that kind of thing.Massachusetts, for example, has plates honoring the Ted Kennedy Swimming Challenge.
Most stay in the suburbs during this event to avoid the violence downtown that invariably accompanies it.
I musta missed THAT one.
Stan Freberg’s version of Banana Boat Song is better, IMHO.

But will he stay awake long enough to receive the award?
He is the furthest thing from a useful idiot. The recipient of the Lenin prize, a colonel in the KGB, an intimate friend of Fidel Castro, the person in charge of steering the show businesses idiots to events in Cuba....
A dangerous and evil man.
I’d prefer to attend White Expo, aka the Brickyard 400.
Paul Menard won it in 2011.
Racist Stalinist pig.
