My grandma thought Birch Bayh walked on water for some reason. Looking back, I really don’t understand it but she’s been gone for years so now I can’t ask. We’ve come a long way! :-)

I met Birch numerous times; even had long discussions with him on transcontinental flights ~ he was a nice guy and he knew how to win elections. He could say "union" and "parity" simultaneously.

He met and married one of my not very distant cousins, so Evan is a relative of sort.

Never hung around with them socially but if I"d attended all the various family reunions over the years I'd met all of them over fried chicken and hickory nut pie fur shur.

Worse, I had a date once with Sandy Hartke. GAD! Got away from her fast ~ didn't she end up having 12 kids or something?

These people were all pretty typical of the sorts you meet all over Indiana and at one time the German Americans (43% of the state's population) were the Democrat party ~ more recently I think they've begun dominating the Republican party.
