Mexican President Felipe Calderón, in Houston Wednesday as part of a brief U.S. visit, sounded a victorious note for his six-year-tenure, saying his policies have helped to drastically reduce the flow of Mexican migrants to the United States, but criticized a "regressive policy toward workers, a hard and offensive type of politics" in the U.S., exemplified in Arizona's tough immigration law.
Appearing likely to be upheld by the U.S. Supreme Court, who heard arguments on it this week, the law would mandate police check whether people they stop are here legally.
"We don't think it's just that someone is discriminated against for their race," Calderón said. "The people who come here are not coming to steal, they are coming to work."
Speaking Wednesday night at Ripley House Neighborhood Center in Houston's East End, a predominantly Hispanic area, Calderón's visit marked the first time a Mexican president has met with Houston immigrants. It concluded a quick U.S. trip in which Calderón, whose tenure ends in December, pushed for Mexico's inclusion in a trade agreement between Asia and the Americas and argued that illegal immigration should no longer be a source of conflict between Mexico and the U.S.
The number of northbound migrants has fallen to the point that it is essentially offset by the numbers of Mexicans returning home, according to a Pew Research Center study released this week. Referring frequently to the study, Calderón said it proved that conditions for "full-scale immigration reform" now exist in the United States, and Americans have no reason to fear it.
The 1942 Bracero program allowed for the importation of Mexican contract workers while Americans fought the World War II, Calderón said, noting, "they were invited to this country. And as invited people they should be treated like guests."

Wonder if his pants were on fire?
Maybe he wants to annex us.
“The people who come here are not coming to steal, they are coming to work.”
Not all of them Felipe. Our prisons are full of Mexicans and they were not sent there for picking artichokes.
Got that,Pedro? MILLIONS of lawbreakers.TRILLIONS of dollars.
And then President Eisenhower had to institute `Operation Wetback’ to chase them back to Mesheeco.
Bite us, Flip—then stay the hell out of our country! Maricon ...
Just to make it fair, we can adopt the same immigration policies and laws as Mexico has.
that should have been “your country’s immigration policies”
Yes, we should have the same imagination policies for both countries.
Billions of dollars wired HOME to Mexico annually. Wonder how many of the poor people who send their meager earnings out of the country then go on public assistance.
.. meanwhile Mexicorruption shoots migrants on the way to the U.S. by crossing into Mexicorruption's government-created cesspool to get here -- and whose home countries also are offended because we don't truckle down to their demands that we be welcoming and generous to their millions of citizens;
.. meanwhile tens of thousands of people from around the world pour into Mexicorruption and head for the border all from countries that are offended because we don't truckle down to their demands that we be welcoming and generous to their millions of citizens;
and we got tens of millions of Obama supporters legally here as Americans who hate it here and demand "Fix it or forget it."
Maybe we can workout a trade?
At a time when the Supreme Court and many politicians seek to bring American law in line with foreign legal norms, its noteworthy that nobody has argued that the U.S. look at how Mexico deals with immigration and what it might teach us about how best to solve
our illegal immigration problem. Mexico has a single, streamlined law that ensures that foreign visitors and immigrants are:
in the country legally;
have the means to sustain themselves economically;
not destined to be burdens on society;
of economic and social benefit to society;
of good character and have no criminal records; and
contributors to the general well-being of the nation.
The law also ensures that:
immigration authorities have a record of each foreign visitor;
foreign visitors do not violate their visa status;
foreign visitors are banned from interfering in the countrys internal politics;
foreign visitors who enter under false pretenses are imprisoned or deported;
foreign visitors violating the terms of their entry are imprisoned or deported;
those who aid in illegal immigration will be sent to prison.
We need to send over some of our poor folks for opportunity in Mexico, all things being equal and all. Mexico, being equal to the US, will offer them free education, welfare and health care plus give them jobs if they chose to work rather than prey upon Mexicans. Prisons could get expensive, but I’m sure Mexico won’t mind.
We could send Jesse and Al over to “protect the rights” of the Americans spunging off Mexico.
I am sure shakedown Al would tell the illegals to respect Mexico’s voting laws and their culture like Mexico does over here./s/
Until he lays off of immigrants from his southern border, he can just shut the heck about immigrants to the U.S.
Hey, Calderon! What RACE is Mexican? Mexican is a NATIONALITY, not a RACE!
"Calderón says immigration should not divide U.S., Mexico"
OK. Maybe the border sould divide us...!
