Romney Wins in Rhode Island and Connecticut Primaries

By Michael O'Brien Updated 8:21 p.m. ET - Mitt Romney won the Connecticut and Rhode Island primaries on Tuesday, putting him on the path toward the general election, and allowing him to tend to unfinished business in the Republican primary.

Facing no meaningful opposition in Connecticut, Delaware, New York, Pennsylvania, or Rhode Island, the former Massachusetts governor was expected to win the vast majority, if not all, of the 222 delegates up for grabs in his bid to formalize the GOP nomination.

While President Barack Obama went after the college vote Tuesday, presidential candidate Mitt Romney was prepping for another primary night. NBC's Chuck Todd reports.

He started the evening, which was expected to showcase his pivot toward the general election, with wins in two of the five states. In the three weeks since the last slate of primaries in Maryland, Washington, D.C. and Wisconsin, Romney’s principle conservative rival, former Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum, exited the race.

One odd thing that could mean why HBO may win the election (assuming it's against Romney). We've had born-again Christan POTUS' since Nixon (in 1968). Most POTUS's have been Christians. Here, you have Romney, who I don't think is a born again Christian and BHO who amazingly is, IMO, a born again Christian (who, like Carter, is a Christian who is also a stanch socialist.)

If he had another 50 of years, he'd probably figure out how terrible socialism is - but he's too young to have figured that out yet. My guess - BHO is one of those "do gooders" who actually believes in the lofty goals of socialism but denies the utter disaster collectivism wreaks on a society.

You might as well vote for Obama. Virgil Goode and Sarah Palin have no chance. What a fool you are.

Our choice is to get rid of Obama, no matter who the nominee is. You can throw away your vote. I won’t. This election is to get rid of the commies. You’re principled vote doesn’t matter this time. Get a clue.

You have ZERO principles. Many of us are voting for Virgil Goode. He is a man of principles and deserves every conservative’s vote. Don’t vote for a liberal like you are planning. What I suppose you would vote for Bloomberg if he were our candidate or Lindsey Graham......it does not make sense to keep lowering our standards.

You guys are really sad. Right now is not the time to stand up for your beliefs. You may think I’m selling out. Romney isn’t my choice, who’s left? You can throw away your vote on some schmuck who thinks he may beat obama or you can defeat Obama.

Listen, I’m a huge conservative, I’ve be here for years. This is our political system. Romney is an inferior candidate, your choices have no chance of moving the needle at all. I hate that romney is our candidate, but I hate more that obama will be re-elected. Today, we have to get rid of obama. That’s the bottom line, get rid of obama.

Gingrich was unelectable from the very beginning. He had baggage that would sink a string of cruise liners and his gender gap with women was wider that the depths of the Grand Canyon. He’s now forced into an undignified exit being kicked out in several sates and his so-called southern strategy in ashes. He ruined Santorum’s chances of defeating Romney in MI and Oh and possibly WI. We’ve had enough about Gingrich between penguin bites, bounced checks in UT, on-again and off-agin campaign, looney ideas of permanent moon-based colonies, $2.50 gallon/gas in two years, amnesty for grandmothers, and cap and trade.

This was a meaningless and quixotic campaign. Santorum got 11 states and over 3 million votes and Gallup at one point had him a point above Obama. Get a reality check. Had Gingrich, like Bachmann, Perry, and Cain, before him, quit after Santorum’s spectacular trifecta, it would have been Santorum on the podium today.

That said, we don’t take our primary battles into the general. As Sarah Palin and even Gingrich himself has said, the task at hand is to make sure that Obama is a one-term president, and hold fire to Romney’s feet should he choose to veer to the center/left.

yup..the GOPe can drive Romney down our throats..but they cant make us swallow!....

I'm starting to think id take 4 more from obama so that the average dumb voter will be screaming for a REAL Conservative.....sometimes the learning curve takes a bit longer then what common sense would tell you...but it will come about...

The problem with your premise is that Romney is as bad if not worse than Obama. They both are liberal and would destroy the country. I say go for a guy who can fix it. Either Sarah Palin or Virgil Goode are those people. Romney will not fight for what is right especially if we have a Republican House and Senate. If we have President Goode than we have the best of all three parts of government with a True constitutionalist with a Republican House and Senate. That is our best option and CAN happen.

Santorum isn’t even in the race, and yet he is likely to beat Newt Gingrich in Pennsylvania.

They won’t win. We have what we have, Romney. Goode or Palin have no chance. Are you delusional? I hate Romney is the candidate, these other guys are less likely than ron paul. Like Mark Levin said, I’ll vote for an orange juice can. Quit attacking me and look at reality. Romney or Obama. That’s our choice.

That is your choice. Not mine. I won’t vote for either of them and many here feel the same as I do. You’re in the minority.

The problem with your premise is that Romney is as bad if not worse than Obama.

The problem with your premise is the number of known, respected conservatives who will take a different position, including in all likelyhood every candidate you have supported up until now (Goode excepted, clearly since he will run in the general election).

At least Gingrich stayed in the race, but so far, it hasn't been good for him. Probably doesn't help him that people are jumping ship to a 3rd-party.
