A Courageous Commissioner !

From the very beginning of the Trayvon Martin/George Zimmerman case I’ve felt Sanford Police Chief Bill Lee got a raw deal. He was essentially run out of his job for deciding there was no probable cause for arresting Zimmerman. Zimmerman claimed he shot Martin in self-defense, and under Florda’s “stand your ground” law, he seemed to Lee to be on pretty firm ground. Then the charges of racism started flying, Al Sharpton and company got involved, tensions in Sanford rose to the boiling point, and to placate the angry protesters, Lee was removed from his post and placed on paid administrative leave.

Monday, Sanford city commissioners met to vote on whether to accept the letter of resignation Bill Lee had offered earlier in the day. It looked like a done deal when Commissioner Patty Mahany, as you’ll see in this report from WKMG, Channel 6, took up for the embattled chief and asked a simple question:

Sanford City Manager Bonaparte on why fire Lee now:

“What has become more apparent to me is that it may take 3-plus more months for an outside federal agency to come in,” Bonaparte said in the meeting.”

An “outside federal agency” is needed? Why, to see whether the SPD did anything Ben Crump and TM’s family can sue them over? Bonaparte is “Haitian-American” fwiw.
